Convert MiB, GiB and TiB—and understand GB
Capacity estimates can disagree when MB and MiB, or GB and GiB, are mixed. Start with the unit definition, then convert using the same byte count.
Divide MiB by 1024 to get GiB
1 GiB = 1024 MiB and 1 TiB = 1024 GiB. Thus 1536 MiB ÷ 1024 = 1.5 GiB. Multiply by 1024 for the reverse conversion. Similarly, 0.5 TiB = 512 GiB.
Check what GB means
A decimal GB is 1,000,000,000 B; a GiB is 1,073,741,824 B. Therefore decimal 100 GB is about 93.13 GiB. The byte count is unchanged. Check the definition in the specification before comparing capacities.
Use this site’s converter
Select Data size, choose MiB as From and GiB as To, then enter 1536 to obtain 1.5 GiB. This tool uses the conventional 1024-based meaning for KB/MB/GB. For decimal 100 GB, select B as From, enter 100000000000 and select GiB as To.
Keep the original byte count
Calculate from the original byte count and round only for presentation to avoid accumulating rounding errors. Capacity inputs must be zero or greater. After clearing the input, enter a new value to calculate again.
